Join Danielle Hoogenboom and Kimani Mcdonald as they guide you through 14 days of New Moon Yin postures and reflections. Comments from each teacher were published on Instagram spanning from the new moon on December 29, 2016 until the full moon on January 12, 2017, and are now archived here for your reference.

Day 1 - Childs Pose

Danielle

Day One: Child's Pose, go peep @kimanimcdonald Natural page now for thoughts and chirp in with us! #yinandjustice from this new moon til full. Pause. Yin. Reflect and Share it up! Things just got REAL. Go Love Up Kimani's fundraising page for school. Speaking of Justice and patience, as she awaits for her student loans...her naturopathic medicine dr program, she can't register for her classes. Should should invest a few days into this badass ND sister of mine! Her work will be radical and revolutionary! Oh Yin in Life! Let's talk. We want you to share and join in with us, yin life is a special kinda of endurance. Steady and Still.

Kimani

Welcome to Day 1 of the #yinandjustice #rebelstudent (showing up to class without being registered haha! Thank you for your donations so far! Link to donate in profile πŸ™πŸ‘†) IG offering with @lovelightyoga. The pose today is CHILD'S POSE. Head over to @lovelightyoga's page for details on the purposes and benefits of the posture. Don't let it fool you...hold this for 5 mins (set your timer!) and watch what comes up. For me, I contemplated deeply the meaning of JUSTICE. Justice is not a moral code of right or wrong - after all, this changes from person to person, country to country, time to time (eh hem... events of 2016!). I think Justice is really the universal impetus for ORDER. This Universe is based on intricate ordering of patterns and events. On a universal level, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Since we are a Microcosm of the universe, we have an innate desire to witness and participate in creating JUST consequences for the sake of social peace and harmony. The key here is that our participation requires DISCERNMENT and awareness of larger forces dictating action and reaction, rather than simply opinion and personal desire. It's a learning process that requires Spiritual overstanding. Really hard!!!! How do you define justice? ? I look forward to exploring more with you over the coming days! Happy new moon!!!

Day 2 - Seated Twist

Danielle

#yinandjustice day two: Dear Yinnies, today we twist, as a metaphor to see and feel two sides/perspectives. Peep over today @kimanimcdonald and her page for thoughts/reflections. Virtual Reasonings! TWIST: I did a variation with my left knee bent and up, my left foot on the ground with a rotation of my spine and chest to the right. I like my arm against my leg to help me get height, start the twist and feel these connections to ease and steadiness, so I can relax into the shape. (think: muscles move bones, then bones support the body). You might chose to have a crossed leg seat. Adapt and modify until it works for you. Find equality between effort and ease. When you change sides of your twist, also change the cross of your legs. Hold each side for 4 minutes. Remember, in yin its not the same attitude as yang. We are not trying to twist as far and deep as possible, we are not trying to force our views/wants or be rigid or push. Allow, surrender, let and embrace. Your body, form and bones are unique to you. #yinmedicine. Each day, we must refine our sensitivity and our inner listening. Breath DEEP, be steady and committed to total fullness, then total emptiness in this twist, full the LUNGS. We sit at an edges of resistance/fear/vulnerability, to FEEL it, without changing or forcing, but allowing the cycles of breath to be insights that invite you to participate with TIME and release the idea of only ONE way. Twists digest all the parts. Embrace adaptability and emotional flexibility as embodied qualities of now. Sometimes the great effort IS the big letting go. While life twists you and you twist in the life, feel the interconnectedness from left to right, from front to back, from inner to outer. See all the parts of the whole needing and being different, yet integral to the collective relationship. And as you twist, and the head looks back behind you..be vast enough to see past duality and embrace a 360 degree perspective.

Kimani

#yinandjustice#newmoontofullmoon#yinyogachallenge with this #rebelstudent and @lovelightyoga. πŸŒ™Welcome to all who joined and posted yesterday! 😍Remember to hold your poses for 3-5 mins for the depth required for YIN benefits (set your timer) JOIN US TODAY! It's never too late to start. πŸŒ™Check out @lovelightyoga for a description of this twist, a metaphor to see and feel two perspectives - crucial to all considerations of justice! Today I want to share my thoughts on justice as a consequence of our interconnectedness. I believe the basis of justice is love and interconnectedness. When there is a transgression of some kind - whether against a child in Syria or a loved one in your own home, we feel moved to speak out and act because our very essence feels their suffering. We call for justice because we know, whether subconsciously or consciously, that we are One.. that the beat of my heart holds the same vibrational life force of the person just shot down. And that when someone does something destructive or ignorant they lack this awareness and are operating purely from their "lower selves". True, ultimate (universal) justice arises when we all come to understand that our nature is love and oneness with all so we treat others how we would ourselves. If you chose love, hold firm on to it and let it continue to guide you in seeking justice...ORDER...in your life. What are your thoughts???? REMEMBER: Click on the link in my profile to donate to my crowdfunding campaign so i can stay in school!! Every mikkle haffi mek dis mukkle!! Right

Day 3 - Firelog Pose

Danielle

Blessed Day! Day 3 of #yinandjustice with @kimanimcdonaldbringing you the themes to meditate on and me offering the poses. Today, another two sided pose: be sure to hold each side for 3-5 minutes and if you leave the shape early, try going back in for your total count. Not all bodies work the same, we are built so differently, meaning don't stress to stack your ankle on your knee because the alternative is a crossed leg seat. How far forward your ankles are, or how wide your knees are is based on feeling your bones and listening for insights. Some people will fold forward in this pose. NOTE: Skeletal Variations, meaning all our bones are different, our range of motion and how they move. This is a major concept in #yinyoga, acknowledging how truly individual each body is. What we do and need is unique to us, the pose is a metaphor for this. This Square Pose is about decisions, compassion and our adaptability in life. There is a good chance you will feel the feelings in this wood element area when we stimulate chi flow, and address the "issues in our tissues': the rage, frustration and anger is in this zone. This is the fuel for great change, the insights for better decisions and inspiration for direct change. Come out of the shape if you feel pain, modify/adapt if its just not so fun...but the only way through it is THROUGH it. Sit on a pillow to tilt your pelvis forward and if your hips are reallly tight, get even more height. Pad up your ankles if they are sensitive and listen to your knees! Everyone has super tight hips it seems...but not many are willing to do the work. Yin is TIME. Cleaning up our inner worlds, making better decisions and going through the awkward process of change is what makes internally strong and flexible. Yin in Action! Peep up at Kimani's page for her #studentrebel call to action and keep rolling with us to the full moon! Join me for the LLY Yin and Justice Teacher Training in Feb in Jamaica.

Day 3 Firelog Pose for the #newmoontofullnoon #yinandjustice#rebelstudent #yinyogachallenge. What a pose to end 2016 with! This pose challenges me BIG TIME! @lovelightyoga tips and tricks please! With a challenging pose comes a challenging meds on Justice. ANIMAL JUSTICE. I'm vegan. Our personal choice to eat meat or not is loaded with emotions, beliefs, assumptions, health claims etc. But beyond these, there is a fundamental question of justice I often think about. The first pertains to our level of consciousness, awareness and willingness to be truthful. Are you aware that the only difference between the cute little puppy in your bed and the cute the pig tail on your plate is a matter of perspective? The second question for me is - how do we JUSTify killing animals for human over-consumption when we lay claims to Universal love and Oneeness, particularly in the yoga community? Awareness is a journey for all of us - for example, I own leather shoes. Further, I can NEVER assume there is one right way to do anything...because really, ultimately we know nothing. Key to growth, though, is removing illusions and knowing that we have a WILL to MAKE CHOICES that align with the peace and love we so want to see in this world. I would love to hear your thoughts!!! Oh, and thank you for the donations that have been coming in slowly, you all all AWESOME!! (Link in profile)

Day 4 - Sphinx Pose

Danielle

Oh HEY 2017. Greeting you with Fierce Brightness and an Open Heart. Giving thanks for all the places, people and potent moments that lead us all to this NOW. Peep back over the last few days and add up all the poses, NEVER too late to start anything. Sphinx for today's #yinandjustice with myself and @kimanimcdonald serving up #yinyoga poses and global thoughts. Join us, we are flowing to the #fullmoon. Start on your belly, stretch our your legs long and surrender all the muscles, UNGRIP. That is a HUGE principle of yin, to let go, unwind and actively participate in releasing the holding, the patterns and inner prejudices. FEEL your bones and breathe deeply into every inch of your form, accepting what IS. Slow and Steady, Long and Strong are the best breathing #mantras for surrendering fear and drawing in wisdom. These are the energetic qualities of the back body. I like the variation of sphinx with my feet up, knees wide-ish. You might choose to leave the legs long. The head could tilt back, or let it hand forward, or even add a yoga block/pile of books to support your head. Play around with how wide apart and how far forward your elbows are. Changing how wide the feet or knees are shifts it all. Stay for 3-5 minutes if you can and really work to relax and surrender the back, legs and butt. All those super supportive and dynamic muscles need to learn to also be passive. Some people will feel this yin shape in their bellies and guts. Use the wisdom we are cultivating to listen and make the best choices. Did you peep Kimani's page yesterday about our #vegan theme? Start today and go check out her page for her virtual reasonings and her ND school journey. photo by @niesha.brown at Bob Marley Beach in Jamaica. Flying back sooooon for two vegan yin retreats weekends and the our Yin and Social Justice Teacher Training. 2017 is bringing some badass co-labs, power alliances and even bigger dreams. Bless up all those the yogis in action and #studentrebels doing the WORK.

Kimani

HAPPY NEW YEAR To my online community! I appreciate you all so much. Cheers to continuing the journey together in 2017! #yinandjustice #rebelstudent#yinyogachallenge. The pose from @lovelightyoga today is Sphinx pose and our meditation is Justice for the Earth 🌏. To the human reading (and writing) this: the Earth is your home. There is no where else for you and your children and your children's children's to live. This is it. This living, breathing Mother provides you with every single thing you need to live and thrive. You are a child of this earth before any other identity. Yet, how do you treat your Mother? You go days without even acknowledging her, you poison her, you suffocate her, you manipulate her in dangerous ways, you take advantage of her offerings. Guys, we are acting like spoiled, ignorant children and this Mama is gonna beat our ass if we don't get it together soon. @lovelightyoga can you share with us some tangible steps to love up Mama 🌏? One thing I appreciate about my studies is learning the science and magic of this Earth and the ways to harness its power for our healing. I have just 1.5 years left in the program! Help me get this ish done!! Please consider donating today!!

Day 5 - Reclined Twist

Danielle

Love Blasts to all the Yinnies out there joining me and @kimanimcdonald for this real journey of #yinandjustice. We are bringing you a yin pose a day on my page, and then peep K's page for themes and reflections. Make a Sound! We want to hear your thoughts and ask away if you need modifications on the shapes. We hope this offering creates some insightful time for your body/mind/soul, and that it inspires you to take action in this world. Link up with your global yin #community, the revolution is friendship! Love to those joining in silently or socially. Today we TWIST. This is great for morning and night, it feels so different depending on the time of day. Start on your back. Bend your knees, with your feet on the ground. Pick up and shift your hips to the right a few inches and then take the knees all the over to the left, onto the ground. IF the ground feels far away, add blankets to rise the earth to you. Try knee on knee stacked, or add a pillow between them if there is a big space. Draw your knees up in line with your belly button zone to start and move your heels away from your butt. If you are on a yoga mat and its too small to contain you, don't fear! BE BOLD. Yoga mats, in my opinion, are made way to small for so many shapes. Extend your arms out to the side, try palms up. You can play with how you shift your shoulder blades under you, and try different positions of the arms. In #yinyoga, you are often looking for the tight/awkward/unbalanced places....so you can stay there, listen and help shift it back towards harmonious balance. BE CURIOUS to the unknown. Modify how high the knees are to the chest to feel a difference in the low back & outer hips. Breath deeply. SIGH. This shape is really about inner balance, digestion and compassion between all the parts. Today, see if you can do the twist a little longer, try for 6 minutes on each side, to help process and detox all the bullshit in life. CAUSE YOU GOTTA FEEL IT, TO HEAL IT.

Kimani

QUICK #rebelstudent UPDATE: I definitely showed up to class today, and even after an entire hour of utter confusion of how to interpret an EKG, and a high chance of being kicked out of class (!), there is still such excitement for what I'm learning and a 100% commitment to making it though to the end. I cannot express to you enough how important this medicine is. In fact (as you probably figured out) access to naturopathic medicine has become a serious issue of JUSTICE for me. It is just NOT ok for medicine to continue on the trajectory it is on.. In fact, so not ok that just by the mere outrageousness of current standards of care and health care access around the world, naturopathic medicine MUST become the mainstream approach for primary care. And not just for the rich, white, lady in North America but for EVERYONE. And should we talk about how NOT ok it is for this education to be this effing expensive??!! #thatisall. #Exhale... First day of school rant definitely not the energy of this beautiful pose lol! Thank goodness I do my actual practice the night before! Enjoy instructions and inspiration on the pose from the beautiful yin goddess @lovelightyoga. And remember you can play your part in helping this shift happen by donating to my tuition campaign using the link in my profile

Day 6 - Reclined Figure Four

Danielle

HELLLO! Our #yinandjustice pose today LOVES to stir the pot AND make you very aware that your two sides are quite different. This is the metaphor in yin (and life), although each part is unique, it is always effected by the greater system. Like in life, when the inner balances are off, the whole system suffers. There is always someone or something bearing the great load on imbalance. So today, I call you to reallllly sit in the sensations on each side, be open to the FEELS, with an aim to restore balance from the depths. Go peep @kimanimcdonald for reasonings and donate to her work as an ND. Our moving forward has a society of wellness warriors depends deeply on our leaders and guides. BLESS up #studentrebels that commit their lives to balance and order. Start this shape on your back. Place your left ankle on your right thigh. You can keep your right foot on the ground, or if you have the inner space, use your left hand to reach between the legs and clasp both your hands on the back of the right thigh. Draw your right leg in closer. YES, you will feel this. Do your yinnie best to relax into the awkwardness of tension and imagine how tightness is an imbalance that distorts the entire system. You are taking one for the team (the whole body and all its mobility!) by staying in these shapes long enough for the fascia to state change. Imagine your whole body is a knit sweater.....if there is a hole or a loose string you pull...it effects the whole. Imagine the entire world like that. If you have more, who has less? See moments as metaphors and marinate in your insights to inspire actions. Make sure you do both sides of this shape, aim for 4 minutes each. Try flexing the foot to support the knee, and even lean left or right, balance isn't centred or static! You can ROAR if you need, but try and stay through it...the only way to change imbalances is to address them, forever. Kimani

Greetings #yinandjustice crew! Can you tell I'm back to the school grind?! πŸ™ˆ#latemuch. The not so pleasant pose today is this figure 4 hip opener (see @lovelightyoga for details) and the very pleasant topic today is WOMEN 😁. For whatever crazy, ignorant reason, society decided that men had more value than women (doesn't that sound extra silly saying it out loud?). That is like saying day has more value than night, or the heads side of the coin has more value than tails πŸ˜³πŸ€”πŸ™„. When I first became a mother, I learned to appreciate the immense power of a woman from personal experience. Pregnancy, LABOR (!) and observing myself navigate the demands of motherhood, home, school and work empowered me beyond belief. I see women as these magical, dynamic lionesses who have an innate ability to weave the web of family, community and globe together with both grace and fire πŸ”₯. Ladies: learn your value in your unique way (which is absolutely not limited to the experience of motherhood, of course) then KNOW your value. From this place of knowing, Justice and equal opportunity for women will naturally unfold. And remember, Justice for the Feminine involves recognizing and embracing the value of the Masculine and how these energies are different. Fun fact: did you know Bastyr University has a demographic of 84% women?! Check out my tuition campaign video using the link in my profile!

Day 7 - Butterfly Pose

Danielle

Sending love and light to all #yinandjustice peeps, do the shapes when you can and add up all the previous days for a full practice. A goal of this offering is to get you rocking some yin each day & creating a platform for conversations. Check out @kimanimcdonald her themes and ND school fundraiser (donate on her page!) and take note my #yinyogateachertraining in Feb in Jamaica. Kimani and I met 6 years ago at a yoga event in Mo Bay. We have continued our reasonings virtually on many themes, have been planting seeds of bigger co'lab works and always feeding the foundational roots of friendship....while we plot a world revolution! Did you peep her theme yesterday, Justice for the Feminine. YES. #yinpower. I bow to all my sisters in this world, doing the great works, building families and communities and strengthening the sisterhood in a world that fears when the feminine unites. Hoping the yin medz flow deeply as a reminder to soften, to allow and to face resistance with grace...both in life and in form. Today's Butterfly pose: start with a proper seat, sit on a blanket to tilt your pelvis forward and give a bit of height. Soles of the feet together, knees wide. You can add blocks under the knees for support, or your fists. You decide on the distance of the heels from the body. Close or far is like two different shapes, try both. Heels closer to you, more inner thighs and feet farther away is more outer hips-ish! Remember in #yinyoga, we the shapes for time. Try 3-6 minutes for this one. You may chose to bow and fold. You could add some props under the arms or add a block under your forehead. The goal is not to get your head to the ground, but feel the shape along the length of your form and honour this moment in time. Be Humble. Breath into the back body, do your best to relax the muscles in the legs. When you feel an inner resistance rise, can you soften it? It takes great strength to be gentle. #yinsights #yinyogachallenge#yogachallenge #rebelstudent. Photo by @niesha.brown in Kingston Botanical Gardens.

Kimani

#yinandjustice#rebelstudent #yinyogachallenge#newmoontofull in honor of my tuition crowdfunding campaign (πŸ‘†in profile) and Danielle's Yin and Social Justice in Jamaicaaaaaa. We are half way! The full moon is on Jan 12th. Go peep on the half moon tonight! Today's pose is my FAVORITE yin pose everrrr. Seated #Butterfly #Badakonasana. Just so yummy. Let @lovelightyoga explain all the details to help you enjoy it too 😊. Today's topic makes me smile and cry all on the same time. Its Justice for our CHILDREN. I can't help but smile because children literally embody pure joy and light. If you ever want to know of your God Essence, spend time with a child with your complete attention. Observe and experience magic, imagination, limitlessness, presence, curiosity, truth, and love. In that moment let them teach you...not the other way around. For this same reason I ball... I know enough to know that I don't know anything. But if there is one thing I don't hesitate for a second to declare it is that IT IS OUR FULL RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE CARE OF CHILDREN. I believe the way we treat our children is a complete reflection of the state of our evolution as a species and planet. Almost every single (adult) patient I have seen so far has had some history of trauma in their childhood, which includes emotional neglect (I am particularly interested in this aspect of medicine). In other words, we are still in the dark ages. I believe justice for our children involves 3 main things: 1. utter protection from harm 2. nurturing their inherent magic and joy as long as possible (they will eventually come to learn of the duality of life, don't worry) and 3. smothering them with unconditional love. Let's start at home and communities doing the best we can, where we are, with what we have. All children are your children.

Day 8 - Seated Forward Fold

Danielle

Can you feel it? We are at midway point with our #newtofullmoonyin series! Keep going forward, add poses..its ok to skip a date and catch up. #yinyoga is an adaptable practice that meets you where you are at. kimanimcdonald and I started this #yinandjustice offering to pair poses with themes to medz. Would love to hear you sound in on my page or hers. Are you meditating on the themes? How are the long holds going? Learning anything special yin side there!? Today's pose offering is Caterpiller, or a seated forward fold. Pelvic Tilt my friends! Take height under your seat to start to 'wedge' you forward. If your pelvis as a bowl of soup, imagine you are trying to pour the contents forward. The legs are long and can be close together or apart. Experiment! Yin isn't the knowing and planning, its the feeling and adapting. Your goal is not to get your forehead to your legs (disclaimer: I have been practicing yoga for 15 years and it took a decade of tension releasing for my head to rest on my legs). Tricky YIN. If you set a 'goal' in yin to reach a spot, we miss the journey (and all tension!). Try going only to your half way point and stay a minute. Relax the arms at the side, or on your legs. I have a special #dreadlock variation for you. Bless up those that carry that weight (18 years of loc carrying here). For a first bit, do a 1/4 fold, like a small humble bow. Feel those dread muscles! Try being in the shape for 5 minutes, but work 2 or 3 different folds. Feel the whole backline from feet to crown, oh fascia you NEED the long holds. You can add a rolled blanket under the knees if its to much too stretch for the legs. Try adding a block under your forehead when you fold, or use your elbows on our thighs and make a prop for your chin with your hands. Belly breathing to nourish the organs. Go peep Kimani's page for today's reasonings and to support her ND school #fundraiser. Few spots left for the #yogateachertraining in Jamaica.#yogachallenge #yinlove #doitnow bless up @niesha.brown for the yin photo shoot in Kingston. Yin in the Gardens.

Kimani

#yinandjustice. Today's pose is a seated forward fold, which is largely a pose of surrender. Check out @lovelightyoga for guidance on the pose. To surrender is not to give up your power; quite the contrary. I will never give up. The truth and healing power of naturopathic medicine is way too important for humanity for me to not fully step into my power using this tool. I will do everything I can with every last effort to. The #surrender is more of a practice of letting go of the "how". The universe is way too creative and filled with such infinite possibilities that to think anything must work out in the way you want, how you want and when you want is a gross misunderstanding of the laws of nature. In fact, it's quite frankly an ego trip. In my position you can imagine this is a moment to moment challenge for me! What I love about my #crowdfunding campaign is that it represents this collective effort of vision and support which is inspiring beyond belief! USE THE LINK IN MY PROFILE TO DONATE AND JOIN THE MOVEMENT! On this note, the #justice topic for today is #ACCESS. We are all individually responsible for much of what unfolds in our lives. But there are also systems and institutions in place that dictate our ability to access things and services that affect us. For example, you may be broke as hell, but your parents helped you get good credit and you have access to a brand new BMW. There may be a beautiful health center close by, but because there are bombings outside you cannot access the service. Since these things are largely out of the control of the individual, it becomes a #justice issue for me. Most systems are not actually created with equal and fair access in mind - in fact, the opposite! Access is an example of the role of leadership and systems in ensuring Justice, which is clearly hardly ever a true priority. What then? We must become leaders of our own lives, own communities, own careers, own institutions, own networks to embody our Values of Justice: Love and Order.

Day 9 - Shoelace

Danielle

Hey Sweet Moon Loving Yinnies, are you looking up at the sky at night? Pause daily to see our lunar sister changing, and let her set a tone for life. Cycles and series of full and empty, the transitions, the easy and the heavy. All part of it. Go give kimanimcdonald some extra love today, first week winter session done! HIGH FIVE! This sister is SO close to completing her education as a Naturopathic DR, can you support a little to her campaign? Peep her bio and her daily themes with #yinandjustice. Today's offering is going to look and feel VERY different on each person...why, cause our bones are not the same and we are built uniquely! Yin is learning to work with what you got, modifying for you. #yinyoga calls this one shoelace, some tight, some loose! Taking height under your seat helps (LOTS of height if you are tight). Tie that little knot of knee on knee. Try different placements of your heels close to your side body, or the feet moving forward and away. I like to lift up my butt, tightened my 'knee knot' of this shoelace and work my feet forward. Stack pillows under your ankles if they are sensitive, add blankets between the knees and thighs if there is space, #yinfort. Think of props as bringing more ease and support in shapes, encouraging you to let go. This one will bring lots of great things to the surface, so use your powers of forgiveness and diffusion to let that shit go! Like for REAL. Yin is the seeing, feeling, processing and eliminating of all the debris in our bodies/minds/hearts, so we can see/feel clearly again. Remember to do both sides of this shape, crossing the other leg on top. Try for 6 minutes of each side. I like this version where you stay up right and let the legs relax, you might like to fold forward. Try leaning a bit left or right, notice along the way. You can also do this shape on your back and grab your ankles, or use a wall.#yogachallenge, are you keeping it up daily with us? Just start NOW. Even for 2 minutes

Kimani

The #yinandjustice #rebelstudent Pose of the day is #shoelace. This one is intense - let @lovelightyoga guide you on intentions and variations to help. Let's talk about #RACIALJUSTICE. Not my favorite topic, for the mere reason that I find it so rudimentary that we still individually and systemically discriminate against people based on skin color ( πŸ™„). Here's the thing: our brains create categories all the time and in each moment we place experiences and memories in these categories (completely natural). The color or someone's skin is one such category, and the associations we have have fall in there too. So brain thinks: X skin color = Y association each time (a stereotype). Three main problems: 1. When our experience is so limited that only particular things and not others make their way in the category box 2. When we assign moral and hierarchical judgements claiming one category "better", "more superior" etc than another 3. When what we *think* we know becomes Ultimate Truth for us so we feel justified in acting on those categories and judgements = unfair, oppressive racist acts. All three problems can be mitigated by Spiritual development as it would quickly uncover the limitations of this level on consciousness. Thoughts?

Day 10 -

Danielle

Yinnies! The #yinandjustice offering is here for the weekend. May I suggest today you have a look back and chose a handful of poses to try? Take some extra time to digest the themes from @kimanimcdonald for meditation while in the shapes. We still want to hear your thoughts on themes and ask if you need variations of the pose. When we finish on the full moon, I will collect and post up all the poses and themes on my site, you can go back and do them again. So can you promise us ONE thing? DO the YIN. Even 4 short poses counts. JUST begin, and what better time than NOW. This shape has two sides, so make sure you do both. Extend one leg out long, bend the other knee and bring the foot to the inner thigh. In Yin, there isn't a 'set' location...try the foot and knee placement differently each time. Sit tall, maybe use a cushion to tilt the pelvis, maybe a block under the bent knee. Props=Support. Muscles move your bones, then relax, surrender and allow. You don't always have to push in shapes (or in life), its time that offers the deep medicine. Twist in the direction of the bend leg and maybe look back behind you. Reflect. Relax the muscles and shoulders, breath deep and long breaths into the belly. Just BE. Again, #yinyoga is not about a 'pose' or state, its the exploration and adaptability of function over form. Form is aesthetic, function is medicinal, subjective and personal. Its what is happening in each shape that is the deep offering, not the external look of the shape. Yoga has conditioned us to think there is a 'ideal' expression to poses. DON'T BELIEVE IT, your body, life, thoughts, bones, energy, and inner knowings are as unique as you. THERE IS JUST ONE OF YOU in this whole world. You are an invaluable and rare resource and I am certain you are here for a divine purpose. When it calls, do you hear it? SIT to HEAR. Kimani and I are super focused on internal medicine, in all its forms. Peep her #studentrebel call in her bio, donate if you can and share her campaign. check out my 75 hour Yin YTT in Feb in #Jamaica. The theme is Yin Yoga and Social Justice with my badass co teacher #yinrebel@diajoycepenning

#yinandjustice. Pose: THIS BEAUTIFUL ONE! I don't think I've ever done this shape before and it feels really, really good! And you should definitely check in with @lovelightyoga - her recommendations and suggestions for today are golden πŸ‘ŒπŸ™. Plus! These wonderful, comfortable, organic, bamboo, cotton yoga clothes I'm wearing are by @lovelightyoga! The philosophy behind these clothes informed the theme for today: #FULLCIRCLE. I introduced this challenge with a general definition of justice which included #order. Let's start here: look down at your clothes πŸ‘€- do you have any idea of the source? What's it made of? Who held it with their hands? How about your food - who planted the seed? In what soil? With what intention? Who picked it? Packaged it? When you throw it away, where does it go?? Imagine that the majority of things we eat, wear and use belong to a cycle which we are totally unaware of. We don't know what was before it or what comes after. This is a disjointed way to live, lacking #order and awareness of the #whole and participating in life unconsciously and irresponsibly. This is something I definitely want to work on this year, starting with proudly modeling off my Sistren's clothes! We know where it was made, who made it and where the material comes from! Feels so good (and TOP quality)! Mat by @selamtayoga on the same Full Circle meditation!!! Loves, together let's at least start with awareness...

Day 11 - Pelvic Tilt

Danielle

Sunday Vibes Yinnies. Our #yinandjustice, can you believe it its Day 11? Go to @kimanimcdonald to check out her medz to match the poses. The shape today works with yesterday, so remember you can go along, add the poses and have a full practice. This one. PELVIC TILT! Take height under the hips to start to tilt the body forward. Imagine your pelvis is a bowl of soup, start to pour the contents forward. One Leg goes long, the other knee bends to the side. Play with foot placement along the thigh. You could add a prop under the bent knee, or even add weight to the thigh. This is about the side body and back of the legs, so rotate and pour over the straight leg. Do you feel it in the back of the leg, the side body or the back? Where do YOU feel it is a huge question in #yinyoga. Making small shifts makes a big difference, examine. If its too much for the straight leg, bend the knee or add a blanket. You can make a pile of books as a prop shelve to lean on too. BE Creative! Remember, yin shapes you hold for TIME. Try 3-5 minutes on each side of the pose (switching legs, and side body leaning). BREATHE DEEPLY. Part of the awkward parts of yin is its exercise for your #fascia. This yin tissue requires slow, long held poses for their to be a state change. True CHANGE require are active seeing and involvement. Think about the process of #justice and today's theme of #underserved as parts in our body. How can we even discuss inner and outer balance and order without looking what 'structure' is? True order extends both to the inner and outer worlds, both we are participating in/with the containers around us. We have a responsibility to question the systems that define. Do the shapes! Its such a metaphor for examining the underserved parts of our selves, seeing the pressures and impacts on our form and making the changes. Go check out Kimani's page and support her #studentrebel call. Want more order in the world? INVEST in the #changemakers and #education. Join the LLY crew for a 75 hour #yinyoga#yogateachertraining in #jamaica in Feb.

#yinandjustice#rebelstudent #newmoontofullmoon#yinyogachallenge. Today's pose in a folded variation of yesterday's pose and is just as yummy! Check out pose deets ----> @lovelightyoga. Btw the tights I'm wearing (also by @lovelightyoga conscious clothing line) I call the #saynotocameltoe #saynotobuttcrack yoga tights πŸ˜†. The struggle is real finding appropriate yoga clothes these days, especially if you got a lil junk in ya trunk! Finally a solution! πŸ˜πŸ‘Œ. On a COMPLETELY different note, the #justice topic is the #UNDERSERVED. There is a common individualist argument against serving the Underserved: if everyone has choice and will and power to create their own reality, individuals should be responsible for their own fate. This is very much a part of the picture HOWEVER the very term "Under-served" implies external rather than internal forces influencing an individual's life. That is, SYSTEMS (created by individuals) that ignore or intentionally deny quality provision and access (usually via unaffordabilty) to a particular group of people. That means that it is an INJUSTICE if systems are not in place to ensure all humans have basic health care needs met which is TOTALLY possible if we just shifted our fucking priorities as the creators of those systems. I am purposely going to hold off my full rant because this literally FIRES ME UP when it comes to healthcare πŸ”₯. Woosahhhhh..... Want to feel more of my fire? Day 12 -

Danielle

Sweet Yinnies. #yinandjustice is moving fast, but you can still go back and peep all the poses and posts and do them when you can. This offering is meant to support a home practice with insights and themes to meditate on it and to shine light on our co-labs and great works with @kimanimcdonald go peep her medz today and support her ND fundraiser. I have a bit of space left in our the #yinyoga teacher training in Jamaica. Love Blasts to those doing the shapes. Everyday the shapes are going to look really different on each person. WHY? Because our needs, histories and internal compositions are so diverse. What is medicine for you, might be poison for me! Keep me mind that yin is honouring where you are in each moment and allowing time to work around and with you. Start with your feet together and knees wide. You can add blocks or books under the knees and remember to add a pillow under your hips for pelvic tilt. SERIOUSLY need to get that curve back to our low back (go have a talk with your chair right now!) Extend one arm up and over your head and allow yourself to lean, using the weight of the arm to shift the side body. Roll slightly forward or back. Look for that sticky tight spot in the ribs and FILL and EMPTY as much as you can! You can even bend the elbow and rest the arm on your head. The hand that is touching the ground could go on your leg, on a prop or a stack of books. Accept where you are and work with what you got. Hold this one for 3 minutes if you can and do both sides. You could look up, or down to the side. Catch that YIN VIBE, to each their own! We can never see or say why another is doing what they are doing. We are so disconnected from internal and the natural, we forget its impacts and effects on us. Today's theme is medicinal justice on the theme of cannabis and herbs. This is a personal, passionate and political topic for so many, go peep Kimani's thoughts for the day and make a sound with us.

Kimani

Today I bring you this hilarious (you're welcome) unfiltered picture to show what really happens behind the camera of a seemingly perfect Instagram yoga challenge πŸ˜‚. To see what the ACTUAL pose looks like, head over to @lovelightyoga! The #justice topic for today is #marijuana (#herb, #ganja, #cannabis). Here is why this is a Justice issue for me. The drug problem in the US (and by extension, the world) is OUT OF FUCKING CONTROL. For many substances, it is the LEGAL production and prescribing of drugs that initiates and propagates the problem. Marijuana is one of our most potent herbal medicines which can act on multiple dimensions of healing: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. There is a disgusting double standard that has made cannabis illegal (yes, this is changing...but to what end?) while legally producing copious amounts of toxic chemicals completely misused as medicine. Let me be sure you understand this: there is always a time and place for synthetic medicine AND cannabis use is clearly contraindicated for many people and many conditions. Both require discretion and proper use. But we are simply not being Truthful in medicine. THIS is a medical injustice. So much to say here - saving you the book. Feel free to share your thoughts!

Day 13 -

Danielle

Did you peep the moon last night? Watch her cycles to understand time. We have no control of time, but its for sure moving and we are def linked to its movements, its emptiness and its fullness. Go peep at my sistren's page @kimanimcdonald and read back on her themes and reasonings of all the shapes. Love them? If you feel so moved, make a donation to her school campaign. She is studying to be a naturopathic medicine dr and she is so CLOSE! Your contribution goes a long way....yin vibes, smallness, with little efforts over great time have profound impact. Don't have $$ to share, can you send her fundraising campaign to peeps that love natural medicine? The link is in her bio. Small collective actions is a great mantra for yin. Sometimes it doesn't seem like things are shifting and changing...but the subtle natural of great change is in small movements....like you add a little bit of #yinyoga to your day, meditation thoughts change, critical theories emerge from your bones. Yin is the SLOW Revealing of it all. Today's shape is a simple one, and lets see if you can hold it a bit longer today...try for 6 minutes total. Get a good seat, add a pillow for height and tilt. Feet together and knees wide. How far forward or close your feet are to you is your choice. This version we are staying upright, not folding. Sit tall and stack your bones so you feel supported in your own inner architecture. Add blocks or books under the knees/thighs. The small variation will be to look to the side for 3 mins, just the head and neck, and then switch sides. Relax your shoulders and breathe. Move into the shape, then surrender and observe .Think of your form as the shell for breath and energy to move in harmonious balance. Make the 4 sides of your neck long. Sit tall and make as much space for the lungs to breath as possible. Surrender your control of time. Yin Medicine is allowing and observing nature to run its course within you. TRUST. The countdown of time is now. Heading back to Jamaica soon for two vegan yin retreats and a 75 hour yin yoga teacher training. Still some space. Come along and dive into YIN.

#yinandjustice#rebelstudebt #newmoontofullmoon#yinyogachallenge. Check out @lovelightyoga for more on this wonderful upright variation of butterfly! The topic today is #criminaljustice. After all, what's a #yinandjustice challenge without consideration of THE justice system. On a daily basis we are aware that if we break the law we have to deal with a fine, court, jail, prison etc depending on the severity. Most seem fair (from the outside) - you kill someone, you go to jail. But what about the human atrocities that occur in the name of justice? Have you ever thought about the fact that it is plain old regular people who make the law, people just like me and you that sit in that courtroom and decide right and wrong, and business-oriented institutions that think people should be locked up in cells for decades? Can you see how dangerous things can get if these people are not acutely aware of their intrinsic bias, changing moral compass, emotional state, need for power etc.? And how archaic it is to isolate and torture human beings as a viable solution to crime on a society level? Its a big, complicated issue and I don't pretend to know the answer hence all questions in this post lol. But once again - let's at least start with awareness and stop accepting shit just because it's the way it is.

Day 14 -

Danielle

BLESSSED FULL MOON! What a joy to journey #newmoontofullmoon with kimanimcdonald and our international yinnie crew. Love and Blessings to all the yin empresses that made sounds here with us. It is an honour and a privilege to link and know so many powerful, involved and loving community leaders. YIN VIBES, hoping you found joy in this simple practice. Kimani and I are brewing up our next offering, watch for it! Follow her school journey and support her fundraiser. I am getting ready to offer the #yinandjustice yoga teacher training in #Jamaica in Feb. Still a few spaces, link up...lots of ways to make it accessible for you. The FINAL shape today is called Caterpillar, but I have added an extra. Cross one ankle over the other, hold for 3 minutes and switch the cross. This bowing forward is easier when you add a pillow under your bum to start to tilt you forward, if you find it difficult to fold. Try leaning a bit to one side and then the other. You could add a blanket under the knees or ankles. Some will feel this in their hamstrings, or IT band love, others in the back, some will feel it along the neck. And here is the yin thing: EVERYONE will feel it differently, in a different area. That is the point. We must address our own holding patterns, our own prejudices, our tensions and histories, our inner and outer bias, our preferences and avoidances, all the facets of this world. YIN and LIFE. So easy, yet so complicated and layered. All of these shapes and the themes were to set in motion the inner movements of contemplation, examination and expression. Being aware, awake and actively involved in every thought, sensation and idea...THAT is yoga in action. Hoping these moments gave insights that (wo)manifest in the world! We are going to be posting all the shapes and thoughts on our websites, so you can peak back. YIN LOVE, what a joy these 2 weeks have been. Bless up

Kimani

We made it! Today is the full moon and the final day of #yinandjustice with @lovelightyoga (<-- to see pose details). I learned so much from this exploration, and I want to thank you for witnessing my process and partcipating. Being vulnerable and committing to a daily practice will always be transformative in some way. What I have come to realize is our ideas of justice simply center on what we consider basic human rights. The underlying assumption here is that we love our fellow humans, appreciate our interconnectedness and believe all people deserve equity. But we cannot assume that everyone has these underlying beliefs. Further, people's morality - right, wrong, shoulds, should nots - also fall into the justice conversation. But if this is different for every single person, justice cannot simply be projecting our ideals on other people. So is there, then, a universal justice? I think if we assume love and the law of cause and effect as our truth - then yes. Let us aim to be the light workers that embody the principles of Universal Justice: Ma'at - Truth, Love, Purpose, Order, Balance, Righteousness and Reciprocity. Remember to check out the Yin and Social Justice retreat hosted by @lovelightyoga in Jamaica
